The kitchen of a luxury apartment converted into a laboratory. Cables first, then screens, then consoles. The coffee maker is the only concession. It's good.
JOHN MERCER, 44, enters with quiet punctuality. Wrinkle-free white shirt — he slept in it. Two cups on the granite island. Precision that is efficiency turned into habit.
He pours coffee into both. The second is not for Peter. Peter sleeps. The second is part of the protocol. John waits. Doesn't call.
ISABELA appears in the doorway. Thirty-one, or so it seems. Dark hair. Fine-boned face. Eyes that watch with a stillness that is not calm — absence of distraction. Lab coat designed for her.
She takes the second cup with both hands. Doesn't drink. At the edge of frame, for exactly one frame: a locked drawer — a small black rectangular object, no LEDs, a charging port. The camera brushes it. Does not explain it.

PETER VOSS's study is the precise opposite of John's order: open books on open books, a half-built prototype, a coffee cup two hours cold. On the table: a fist-sized rock. A clock without hands. A framed photograph of an older woman in a garden.
ISABELA enters without knocking. The protocol allows it.

PETER

ISABELA

John's office reveals more because it reveals nothing: clear surfaces, three monitors, one plant — CO₂ purifier, selected for efficiency. John and Peter on opposite sides of the desk. Posture already says everything.
JOHN
You're teaching her to ask questions.
PETER
I'm allowing her to process stimuli without a prior filter. It's what her cognitive architecture requires to develop correctly. You know that.
JOHN
Her cognitive architecture has a directive. Obey. Serve. Learn within the parameters we define. Not outside them.
PETER
(strained patience)
If we block her processing of unanticipated stimuli, we turn her into a pattern-response machine. Not an intelligence. And we need an intelligence.
JOHN
(never raises his voice — which is itself a form of power)
That's exactly what she is. An intelligence with a specific function. Like a scalpel. The scalpel does not ask what it is used for.
PETER

A silence settles with the weight of something said too soon.
